Michael Hickerson, better known as Fish is a native
New Orleanian and has contributed significantly
to the betterment of the GLBT community. Hickerson
is best known for his work on behalf of the William
J. Fanning Foundation, popularly known as Buzzy's
Boys & Girls. He is on its board of directors
and annually produces Turn-A-Bout, which is consistently
one of Buzzy's biggest fund-raisers. Hickerson's
other services to the GLBT community are so numerous,
they could fill a page by themselves, so the following
are just a few: Chair of Gay Pride Festival 1983,
cofounder of the Krewe of Polyphemus and its first
queen, active member of the Krewe of Amon-Ra since
the mid 80s and its ball captain in 1988. In 1985
he was Southern Decadence Grand Marshal XIII. Hickerson
has also served on the board of directors of the
Lesbian & Gay Community Center of New Orleans,
and was a founding member of Belle Reve. He was
appointed by Mayor Sidney Bartholomew to the New
Orleans AIDS Planning Council. Hickerson is currently
the director of the HIV/AIDS program at Great Expectations
Foundation, Inc.
